What Does "Quality Work" Look Like and Does the Quality of Our Work Matter?

Build television sms voting polls at Poll Everywhere

The campaign flyer I have shared with you was actually used by a candidate in a civic election a number of years ago.  The candidate did NOT get elected during that particular campaign, but during a subsequent election the candidate WAS successfully elected.  The flyer that the candidate used the second time around was much better -- it was clear, concise, well written and visually appealing.

Consider and comment:

  • Do you think that this "improved flyer" helped to portray the candidate in a better light?
  • Should the quality of the flyer matter to voters?  Why or why not?
  • What does the quality of a person's written work communicate to others?

  1. For sure, did the improvised flyer help. You look stupid when you spell simple words wrong, and you appear like you don't know what you are doing. The more professional the flyer, the better you will look in the voter's eyes.
The quality should matter, because the potential Councilors should be able to get their ideas across professionally.
A person's written work communicates much about the person. You can tell whether a person is able to communicate proficiently or not through their writing. You can tell if they really know what they are talking about through their writing.

  2. Yes, but some voters might have written off the candidate's potential after the first letter.

No, although presentation is important for a candidate during a campaign, I would hope people vote not just for the look of a flyer but for a candidate's ideas and platform.

A good flyer shows if this person is a hard worker and if they are good at communicating their ideas with others. It can also show the level of education someone has had. For instance, an essay from someone with a degree in English will most likely be better than that of a high schooler.

  3. Yes, because it showed that the candidate really was smart, that he was not disorganized or sloppy, and that he was able to do a simple task very well. I think it showed people that he really did have the skills and potential to represent them.

The quality of the flyers should matter to voters, because they should want the person that is representing them and their community to be smart, neat and knows what he is doing. If voters didn't care about the flyer I think that they wouldn't care as much about who is representing them and could care less who did.

The quality represents what kind of person they are and how they do things. For example someone who doesn't bother to edit their work or have someone look over it has the attitude that they don't care and just want to get it done. Therefore someone who takes the time to edit their work shows that they care and want things to be done right and properly. The way these people portray themselves through writing show voters what kind of people they will be and the way they will represent you and your community.

  4. I think that the improved flyer helped the candidate a lot. With the other flyer he didn't seem professional and it made him seem a little lazy by not putting the effort in to fix simple, little mistakes. The quality of the flyer should definitely matter because it portrays the effort, professionalism and thoroughness of the candidate. If the quality of a persons work reflects the effort or a persons as well as how much they care about their work. It shows how proficient they are at the task and if the work is good quality it will be accurate representation of their understanding and what they know.

  5. Yes, he showed that he had gained the skills required to gain the vote of the people. (In the end.) As his first flyer did not do so successfully.

I believe it matters, as it displays a simple set of skills that many people should have acquired at that time in their life. And that if they do not have them, some learning should be done.

It communicates the knowledge and skills of the writer. (In most cases.) The reader can make assumptions on the writer's skills depending on the format. (Text, email, business letter, formal letter, etc..)

  6. I think that by improving the flyer, this candidate was able to show that he is actually an intelligent person, whereas with the first flyer this was not the case. With the first flyer having several mistakes the candidate did not seem all that professional and it didn't seem like he was taking it too seriously. It felt like he didn't even care and he just wanted to get it over with. The quality of flyer should definitely matter to the voters because really, why would you want to vote someone in that doesn't even know how to use proper grammar. If they can't even do such a simple thing as that, how can you expect them to be professional at anything else they do. The quality of work portrayed by someone is a direct reflection of who they are, what they value and their understanding of the world around them. If their work is done in a sloppy manner, this would most likely indicate that they themselves don't really care about or value their work.

  7. Yes, the revised copy helped alot because it shows that he now knows what he's talking about and that he's fixed the problems of the first letter. It makes him look more integretable and intelligent about what he's talking about. In the end the mistakes he showed on his first letter made him look like he's not a hard work and the new copy shows that he is a hard worker. Which would you prefer?

  8. Personally I think the revised flyer definantly shone a more... colourful light on this anonymous candidate. Errors in the written work of a person who could potentially possess the power to alter legislation; atleast within the city of Edmonton, needs to be outstanding in his/her writing in order to portray [your] professionalism, show others that sense of classiness, and inform others of [your] dedication to the language (English).

AS to weither these errors would significantly impact my decision to elect this candidate, if at all is highly unlikely. However this is only my opinion and based on statistics, this would absolutely be a game changer. The persons ethics and ideas would likely be of higher importance in this case.

The quality of ones written work has great potential when communicating to an audience, especially an audience with immense numbers such as Edmonton. It allows the reader to sense the writters fluency in their language and the professionalism that is so highly required, in this case for a position on city council.

  9. If you are looking at a candidate for a high position in your government, you are going to want this person to have many specific characteristics. some of these likely include: Intelligence, ability to accomplish tasks on time and properly, appearing proffessional, and giving the citizens of the city he or she governs the best that he or she can give. Having an unproffessional advertising campaign with spelling errors and grammatical mistakes will lower the value people place on that candidate. That candidate seems like a person who is unfit for the job. Having a well organized flyer with no errors, that can attractively portray the candidate, will be far more likely to attract support as it matches the requirements people place on candidates.

Yes having a good flyer definitely helped the person immprove his chances of election. He made himself appear far more respectable than his previous flyer did.

  10. By revising the campaign letter the candidate shows that he still has some degree of professionalism and cares how people see his message. The fact that his first letter had so many mistakes I believe lead to him being misunderstood and pushed aside as a candidate without any real thought. When your true message is coloured by that first impression of poor grammar people would dismiss you on that fact alone.

The quality of peoples work shows their commitment to making a good product and it shows to some degree that you care enough about the subject enough to put time into it and not just put things out there that are quickly and poorly done.

  11. Of course the second flyer made him look better. The first flyer was written horribly. If this flyer was the only information given to me by this councilmen i would write him off as some high school drop out.. If you want to stand out and win an election make yourself stand out. Don't do a half done job and expect to get voted in!
These errors however likely wont make a huge difference in the outcome of the vote. Yes people wont want an idiot representing them but personally on my first read through I didnt notice any of the errors. i think the average person skimming it would not notice the errors as much as they noticed the ideas and real "supper" of the flyer.
the Quality of the work communicates a level of intelligence to the reader. it also gives the reader the idea that this person put time into this and its important. It also communicates how professional the writer is.

Should the quality of the flyer matter to voters? Why or why not?
What does the quality of a person's written work communicate to others?

    1. Yes, it did help portray the candidate in a better light, because people could see that he was trying to get his point across. Another thing people had an easier time believing, was that he was using common sense and not spitting nonsense with the "improved flyer".

    2. Yes, because although the candidate had a lot of good points, some voters may not believe he was actually trying to make a point, because he didn't state them like an intelligent person due to the bad sentence structure in his previous flyer.

    3. If your writing work is good quality (etc, organized, proper sentence structure, good spelling and/or grammar, etc), then people will believe that you did your best to tell the truth like a civilized and mature person. When you don't use proper sentence structure and such, people will assume that you didn't at least try to get your point across.

  13. I think that the improved version is a hundred times better! The first flyer made him sound like he never went to school. So who in their right mind would elect a person who sounds like a twelve year old with dyslexia. The quality should be important to voters, if not then I don’t believe that they are mature or smart enough to be casting a vote. If the candidate didn’t take the time to edit and re-read his flyer, then who’s to say he’s gonna take a second look at your concerns!

  14. the improved version of the letter is a way better way to portray professionalism. The first one was sloppy, inaccurate, and had a lot of errors. The second flyer definatley mad him look better and he had a much better chance of getting elected. I think that voters should definatley consider the neatness and professionalism of a letter like this. It will show the how much this guy actually wants the spot. This guy was spelling simple words very wrong and had no grammar structure. Who in their right mind would vote him in?! The quality of a persons work reflects their willingness to achieve and succeed! Obviously this guy was not ready to achieve or succeed!

  15. yes, the first version of the letter made him seem very unprofessional. It was sloppy quick work. People probably saw him as a person that doesn't care or that is lazy. He had some good points and the with the improved version people could take them more seriously. It would make him seem like a professional.

No I don't think the quality of his writing should matter to voters. Not everyone is a gifted writer, this man probably has good ideas and I think that the message behind what is written is more important than how it is laid out.

The quality of his work is pretty much saying that he is lazy or unintelligent. People probaly didn't see him as a professional. If he can't take the time to edit his writing then how can he take the time to run a community.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Yes the improved flyer definitely helped to portray the candidate in a better light. I think that the quality of the flyer should matter to voters because it shows what the candidate cares about. If the candidate doesn't care about punctuation and spelling and doesn't pay attention to detail in his flyer than his constituents will not be able to trust him to take care of their concerns and issues they are worried about. The quality of a persons written work communicates if they care about detail. It shows whether they are willing to put the time and effort in to other things in life.

  17. The think that the improved version of the letter was much better then the first letter. It helped him improve his appearance in the eyes of his voters by making him sound much more professional giving him a much better appearance in the second election than in the first election.
I believe that the quality of quality of candidates flyer should reflect on the way the voter should see the candidate. The voters should care how well written it is because if they didn't care you could be letting a person who just ran cause he could, not really caring about how people see him into government.
The quality of a persons written work represents how much they really care about that topic. If you care about that topic a lot it will tend to be better written and have less mistakes in it.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yes, of course! You should put effort into a piece of writing that is released to the public, if you can't do that, you shouldn't expect to be elected. I definitely believe that the quality of the flyer should be important to voters, he should have taken the time to edit the flyer. The quality of a persons work illustrates how important the issue/campaign is to them, ifthere are simple errors in a persons writing, they appear not to care if their work/writing makes a difference.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yes, The updated version of his letter was definitly better. It had improved impact on his voters and may have been the reason he got into office the second time.
When someone takes the acual time to look through and think about what he is writing it acually shows that he means what he is doing and really cares and is pationate about what he is going for.
When he wrote that first version it made him look very unprofessional and i think at least he noticed his problem and took some incentive to make it better and maybe get someone to look through and read it over.

  20. Yes I think that this improved flyer did portray the candidate. Since he is running for Councillor, we expect him to know about the city and also act professionally. And since we don't know this person, the flyer is the only way that we can judge for ourselves if he is able to help lead this city. If the quality of the poster is bad, then we have no choice to assume that he is unprofessional and unfit for the job. The quality of work communicate to us the readers how much someone actually cares about the matter, and to the degree in which they understand it. So yes the quality of writing is very important as portrayed by this situation: step up your writing and you'll have an edge in the game.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Yes. If there are grammatical and spelling errors like in the first flyer it gives the impression that they don't care and are not paying attention to what they are saying. No one wants to vote in a candidate who will not do their job properly. A good flyer that has no grammatical or spelling errors shows the candidate is diligent and ready to work for his or her Ward. So the second flyer definitely showed a candidate who was ready to support their ward.

    ReplyDelete
  22. If you care about what people think,or will react to you will put care into your writing to appear that you put time into your work.Having a messy sloppy excuse for a poster shows them, partly that you dont care, and also that if u didnt put time into it,then what will you bring to office in the first place. The second poster showed that he was willing to try and put time into his poster, showing us he has time for us, the voters. we all should care about quality as it shows us alot of different things about the person,as well as whether they are even a suitable choice at all.

  23. The improvised flyer definitely portrayed the person in a way better light, making them look more intelligent. The quality of the flyer is extremely important since it represents the candidate. If you have a poorly written flyer, the voters will think poorly of you because of what/how you wrote. That is why it is important to edit and make sure the letter doesn't sound stupid. The improved quality of the candidates work shows that he is concerned about how he presents his information since that is a big way to get people to vote for you.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Yes, the improved letter showed a higher level of professionalism and educated.
I think that the quality of the letter should matter to the voters. By the lack of caring about the quality of the letter, it could convey to voters that the candidate is untrustworthy and irresponsible when it comes to dealing with their concerns and issues.
The quality of a persons work represents how much they care about the topic and how important it is to them. A persons attention to detail could be what shows whether or not they are committed to the duties of their job, and if they are willing to put in time and effort.

  25. The quality of the flyer should and does definitely affect the genera public. It shows the height of their professionalism, and how much they care about their work. The improved flyer showed that he did care about his work and what he did, and that he was a professional. The quaity of a persons work shows other how much they care about what they do, and it shows if they realy will work to make change or not

    ReplyDelete
  26. Yes, I believe that it did help him because it looks like that he knows what he is doing and that he can represent us.
Yes the flyer really should matter because most people that would receive this flyer wouldn't know who this person is because the flyer is going to people that you hardly know so you need to make a good first impression.
The quality of a persons work is so important because it could decide wether you get a job or not

The lack publishing on the letter greatly affected public view on this man. It demonstrates professionalism and quality of work. If he cannot even preform the relatively simple task of successfully writing a letter; why should we trust this man with our money? If he doesn’t care about his work why should he be put in power? Consequently he is not worthy of such a powerful position. The new flyer would redeem him from his precious mistakes and transform the public opinion in his favour.
The quality of writing should affect the voter’s opinions because someone of such high status should be able to do it professionally.
The quality of someone’s work should portray their attitude, quality, and ideas. Furthermore the quality of ones work should accurately represent their understanding.

  28. Yes I believe the new flyer showed more intelligence for the candidate. I think it is important for voters to look at the quality of information they are getting. How a person writes shows how they think. If the candidate was thinking the same way that the first letter was written, it shows an obscene amount of unprofessionalism .
The effort someone puts into something also reflects how much they care about the situation. With the effort of the first flyer it doesn't seem like they cared enough about the topic. Would you want to vote someone in who doesn't care?

    ReplyDelete
  29. The improved flyer greatly helped portray the candidate in a better light. Without editing it looked very unprofessional.

The quality of the flyer should matter to voters. If not then maybe they shouldn't be voting. If you read a flyer with that many errors and still vote for him you must have a great reason to.

The quality of a persons written work communicates to most, if you actually have an understanding of english. Although if you are someone in power who has poor writing practice it also communicates you have a lack of effort. How can you be expected to have good practice in anything if you can not even be bothered to edit your writing.

  30. I think the improved flyer can help the portray candidate have a better light because the public can know about the background and future policies of that candidate.
Yes, outlooking is quite important in the world, if the candidate have a well flyer, this can attract the people to read it and let more people to kanow this guy. Also, a detail item can show the abilities of a candidate, such as management and menitor skill. If a political people doesn't care their flyer, how do they manage the residents, government, even a country.
Well, a candidate means the people who will be chosen by the residents to represent them to talk with government. The candidate can show the social problems to governemnt and require government to do somethings to the residents so that the good candidate should have a good writting and communication skill to show the view of residents clearly.

  31. Quality of work is important because it shows that you care. This man published an article that he did not even care to revise. This can e taken negatively because it reflects the kind of person he is. The message shown from the article is that he doesn't do very much critical thinking, doesn't seem to care for perfection, or try to strive for it, and this portrays him as a very careless man. Looking back at his mistake, he probably would learn that the reason why he hadn't been elected was because of his poor work in examining the things he does and for sure, he would change things the second time around if he really wanted position.

  32. I strongly believe and view that if you are going to publish something publicly and especially on a professional level there should be at least five proof readings by all separate people, this was for a governmental standard and makes them look like fools. But take away all the errors and it was a good letter

  35. The improved flyer definitely helped him by making him look more intelligent. The quality of the flyer matters a lot because shows that you are professional, it also show that you pay attention to detail. All of these things will appeal to the voters. The quality of a persons work shows how smart they are and it can show who much they care.

  36. Yes, although people would have thought otherwise because of the quality of the flyer. The quality of the flyer does make an impact on people and it affects the people that are voting and reading it. It shows professionalism and how serious the person is and if they care enough to go back and find mistakes to correct. An improved flyer would definitely help! Although the person had good things in their flyer, it had a lot of mistakes on its presentation of it, and that can definitely change peoples mind.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yes the improved flyer probably boosted his vote by a considerable amount. This should defiantly impact your vote. Poor presentation of written material shows poor education and do we really want someone who has a poor education in charge? I think not.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yes, I definitely think that the improved flyer helped the candidate because it made him appear to be a lot more proffesional than his first flyer. It is important to make sure that the quality of your work is excellent especially if you are trying to impress the public. Otherwise it shows that you don't take time or effort in what you do and that doesn't seem like a good characteristic to have if you want to be an influential and successful leader.

  39. The improved flyer showed that the man cared about what he was doing and it showed that he actually put thought into what he was saying too. The quality matters to voters because through the quality they can see what the persons values and what is important to him. It shows that he is professional, and that as I previously said, that he cares.

  40. Yes, I believe that the improved flyer definitively helped the candidate be portrayed in a better light. If his flyer was messy and not edited, it communicates that he is very unprofessional. But if his flyer's have no errors, it communicates he is professional and does care about his work. Therefore the quality of a flyer should matter to voters!

    ReplyDelete
  41. An improved flyer would have helped the candidate communicate his thoughts better. To be honest all of his mistakes made him come across quite dull and lazy. The voters should really take his errors critically. If his flyer, which is being distributed city wide, was too much for him to edit how will he deal with other important documents given to him by the city of Edmonton?
