To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee

The title of the classic novel, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, refers to a line from the novel itself, where Atticus Finch says to his children, "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy... but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to kill a mockingbird."
The video (above) is of a Northern Mockingbird singing its song. Please watch and listen. What do you think? Answer the poll question below:

  1. I don't necessarily think it is a sin to kill something that does no harm. I think it greatly depends on what your intentions were when harming or killing this thing. Just think back to the the 1700's when the aboriginal peoples of Canada would kill innocent buffalo; it was because they needed the buffalo for food and survival. Does that make them a sinner? No, there is a food cycle and that is just one of the links that completes it. However, killing something such as a deer for fun and leaving the carcass to rot would be perhaps more sinful.

  2. It really depends. Yes, massacres, wars, genocides, and abortions can be considered wrong, because God didn't give us the authority to control the population of human beings. Abortion would be wrong specifically because one day that fetus is going to become a human being like anyone else.

However, after the flood, God allowed us to eat animals, so it is not wrong to kill innocent animals to eat. The passage below even says so. After all, if humans need meat to survive, along with other carnivorous/omnivorous animal, why shouldn't they eat animals?

"Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. -Genesis 9:3" (From bible gateway)

According to the passage below, however, killing animals in a way that would involve much pain and suffering is a sin, because animals have feelings just like human beings.

"But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. -Genesis 9:4" (bible gateway)

  3. I believe that it mainly depends on what is being killed. And how common it is for someone to kill that thing. It is more sinful to kill without a sensible reason, than with. Ex, hunting for food is not to be considered sinful whereas killing for pure enjoyment is.

  4. “It was then that Jem and I first began to part Company?”

The statement Scout pronounced justifies the increasing divergence in her sister-brother relationship with Jem. She reinforces her point when she states “then he neglected me”(pg. 41)and “ Jem and dill excluded me from their plans” (pg.42). Evident in earlier chapters Scout and Jem have gradually been separating. The four year age difference between the two of them caused many implications dealing with maturity levels and colleagues. In addition, being the opposite gender created repercussions concerning interests, roles, and opinions. Likewise the invasive interference of Dill had huge consequences on their mutual relationship. He forced a giant wedge in their friendship causing them to stray. Overall all of the attributes cause Jem and Scout’s connection to slowly disintegrate.

  5. To kill is to end a life. whether or not his is considered a sin depends on your religeon, values, conscience, and what the world around you agrees is a sin.
To kill an animal for food is a necessity and must be done quite often for the sake of our own survival, just as any carnivore would do. To do so simply for the pleasure or satisfaction of killing is, in my opinion, wrong.

Deuteronomy 5:7 "You shall not murder."

To murder a human has always been a sin; however if done as a just punishment for a serious crime it is considered in most societies to be acceptable. In my opinion, the killing of any person or animal, without a just cause, is wrong.

  6. Personally, I think it depends on what your killing and why you're killing it. Many people kill animals and use them for many different things. In that sense no, I do not believe it is wrong to kill something. On the other hand I do believe it is wrong to kill or harm something that is innocent just for fun. If you have harmful intentions and do it just for fun then I do think it is wrong and cruel.
