Many of the people who lived in Maycomb were worried that moving Tom to the jail there in town would cause unease with some of the people. "..."...movin' him to the county jail tomorrow," Mr. Tate was saying, "I don't look for any trouble, but I can't guarantee there won't be any...." ..."Nobody around here's up to anything, it's that Old Sarum bunch I'm worried about... can't you get a- what is it, Heck?" "Change of venue,"..." The mob was formed because several of the men just outside Maycomb were unhappy about the crime Tom Robinson was accused of and because he is also African American. On Sunday night, while Atticus was watching the jail, the mob came up to the jail and demanded that Atticus moves out of the way. However, when Scout jumps into the group and starts talking to Mr.Cunningham they decide to leave. According to Atticus ".... you children last night made Walter Cunningham stand in my shoes for a minute. That was enough." The kids made the mob stop in their tracks and see that they are still separate people and not just a mob. It's easier to do things as part of a mob because you are not the only person responsible. Being part of a mob gives people an extra burst of courage to do something they otherwise wouldn't think of doing.
