Scout & Calpurnia: A Child's Perspective (SDH's class)
Describe Scout’s relationship with Calpurnia. Can we trust Scout’s perspective on this issue?
In Scout's opinion, Calpurnia is always favouring Jem over her and she is always getting mad at her. "She was all angles and bones; she was nearsighted; she squinted; her hand was wide as a bed slat and twice as hard. She was always ordering me out of the kitchen, asking me why I couldn't behave as well as Jem when she knew he was older, and
calling me home when I wasn't ready to come." -pg. 6
No, I don't think that we can trust Scout with her perspective on this issue, because Scout's still young and she doesn't understand that Calpurnia only cares a lot about her, and wants what's best for her. "Calpurnia bent down and kissed me. I ran along, wondering what had come over her. She had wanted to make up with me, that was it. She had always been too hard on me, she had at last seen the error of her fractious ways, she was sorry and too stubborn to say so." -pg. 29. Scout still has a lot to learn, she needs to realize that Calpurnia cares for her and Jem equally, and that she's just trying to give Scout what's best for her.
