Ch. 21: Explain Reverend Sykes’ statement, “Miss Jean Louise, stand up.  Your father’s passin’.”

  1. What I believe Reverend Sykes meant by this statement was to act in respect
    atticus who is outlandish enough and brave enough to defend a black man because in that time they were considered as an inferior race. This statement shows how scout is fairly oblivious to what her father means to the black community and how he is placed in a position of respect.

  2. Reverend Sykes' command to Scout tells us something important about his character. It's his belief that if someone in a state of power has the conviction and the courage to defend what is right, they should be respected. Even after the court case the black community continues to support Atticus for doing all he could, as shown in Calpurnia's comment, "They 'preciate what [Atticus] did" (213). I agree with Willem that Scout is quite naive about how important her father is to the coloured people of Maycomb and I would add that just sitting with them gave her a better impression on their culture.
