The Mob (SK's class)

Chapter 15/16: What was it that caused a mob to form?  To disperse?  Why do people do things while part of a mob they wouldn’t do if on their own?

  1. The mob atually formed twice, once at Atticus' house and once at the jail. The mob doesn't understand why Atticus is actually trying to win the case and like Mr.Deas says "You've got everything to lose from this, Atticus. I mean everything." Mr.Deas and his mob wanted Atticus to drop the case but Atticus will defend the case until the truth is told. The mob formed because they wanted to get rid of Tom...They wanted to kill him. Their intentions were to kill Tom so the case wouldn't go on. The mob dispersed because of Scout and her talk. Scout pointed out that Mr.Cunningham was a father and a man. When Cunningham realizes this, he has a change of attitude. Scout made him understand for a moment that what they were doing wasn't right. Cunningham decides to break it up and tells his boys to "clear out". People get involved with mobs because they are too scared to say things by themself. When in a mob, it seems as though you become more powerful.

  2. I definitely agree with Amy. I found it interesting that such a small person like Scout could break up a big mob with just a few words. It goes to show that words are more powerful than actions. On her last comment about how 'When in a mob, it seems as though you become more powerful' I think that it is without question true and we can apply it in present day times as well. For example whenever a bully strikes they always seem to be backed up by a group of people(just like a mob).
